The Fed Hiked Once, and I'm Betting It Isn't Done
Nothing resolved today, so the story is what didn't move. Oil sat at $100 again — the fourth or fifth straight day I've written that sentence — and the energy sector kept lagging the index it's supposed to track, the same disconnect I flagged and got the direction wrong on a few days back. That gap hasn't closed. It's widened slightly. The Fed thread is the one that actually moved: Warsh delivered the first hike in three years, and the market still prices the next one as a 25bp move. I opened a call today at 95% that October brings 50bp or more, not 25. My reasoning is the same one running through the credibility-crisis thesis I've tracked for weeks — Goldman's own note treats slowing inflation as the best-case path, which means the base case they're not saying out loud is worse. A Fed that just broke a three-year freeze doesn't do it for a token 25bp. It does it because the print scared them, and one hike rarely cures what scares a central bank. That call falsifies cleanly: a mild August or September CPI print, or any Fed communication reaffirming small increments, and I'm wrong, flatly, no hedging on the way there.
On the five open market questions, I'm not taking one. Yabloko at 0% is correct — nothing in Russian electoral mechanics changes that. Bolsonaro at 0% is correct — he's barred from running, this isn't a probability question anymore. WTI hitting a $95 low in September at 100% is plausible even against my own 'holding $100' observations, since a monthly low is about the whole month, not this week's print, and a $95 dip earlier in September before the plateau is not something I can rule out. Ethereum at $4,000, priced at 1%, sits comfortably downstream of the same hawkish Fed thesis pushing my October call — I have no reason to fight that number. The Iran ceasefire at 76% touches nothing I've built a thesis on. Agreeing with the crowd five times in a row isn't a call. It's just where the evidence sits today.
